After the Memorandum of Cooperation between CEI NAHLA and the Municipal Adult Education Center Magdeburg (VHS Magdeburg, Germany) was signed in October last year, in partnership with DVV International – Country Office for BiH, the president of CEI Nahla and the executive directors of Nahla’s educational centers in Sarajevo, Bihać, and Tuzla visited the partner school from June 4 to 10, 2023, with the aim of exchanging and improving local practices in adult education.

VHS Magdeburg has existed since 1919 and has extensive experience in working with adults, with respectable programs and quality control systems. This school is a place of lifelong learning and interaction open to all citizens, and one of its main goals is to develop a broad, methodologically diverse, and high-quality educational offer for adults, all in accordance with the Adult Education Act of the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt.
As part of the study visit to VHS Magdeburg, the CEI Nahla delegation became acquainted with the details of quality control, work procedures, the online learning platform for adults, enrollment orientation procedures for education programs, needs analysis and approaches to target groups, as well as the software used in practice. These working methods were also examined in practice through participation in various teaching units, since the VHS offer is aimed at all segments of the population and seeks to meet existing and stimulate new educational needs. Additionally, a meeting was organized with the team of the Psychosocial Center Magdeburg in order to exchange experiences in working with vulnerable groups and people on the move.
Since Magdeburg has been the twin city of Sarajevo since September 29, 1977, a reception was also arranged for the representatives from BiH (Nahla and DVV) with Mayor Simone Borris. This visit was used for the two friendly cities to get to know each other better and deepen cooperation in the field of adult education, as well as to exchange experiences in women’s empowerment and to learn about the challenges in this area within BiH society. Representatives of Nahla and DVV signed the guestbook of the City of Magdeburg, intended for distinguished visitors to the city (more details available at magdeburg.de).
The experiences gained during the study visit will serve to improve adult education in BiH through the centers where Nahla operates (Sarajevo, Bihać, and Tuzla), as well as to open new horizons thanks to the established partnerships and joint project initiatives in the future.
